My figure tree series has grown out of a love of life drawing… and a vivid imagination.
After attending life-drawing workshops utilising multiple models, I was struck by how similar the body curves were to the fig tree drawings I was so fond of doing. In particular, the shapes of the trunks, aerial roots, and branches of a fig tree remind me of the body shapes, but in an unnatural setting.
I have explored this topic many times with different media and still enjoy the intricacies of how tree limbs and bodies form, entwine, and interact to become one. Is it a tree brimming with life, or life forming the soul of the tree?
Once you see it, you can’t un-see it. The shapes continue to fascinate me, and it is a subject I am happy to revisit often.
