A friend challenged me to produce a painting of a local area, Wynnum Creek.
To prepare for this painting, I studied the area, walked around, and took lots of reference photos. I saw it at low tide, high tide, peaceful and hectic. Sometimes, with people fishing and playing, with boats, jet skis, and kayaks coming and going.
This photo I particularly liked. It was just one of those moments in time, the tide was in, the breeze was slight, the clouds were relaxed, and it was calm, peaceful, and looking quite pretty.
But then, the challenge was to paint it! I’ve started this painting many times, but never felt like I was doing it justice.
I saw a competition promoted for a local photo to be the public art installation at the newly renovated Lindum train station. I thought, “Why not”? I entered, “Wynnum Calm,” and to my surprise and delight, it was chosen, and now here it is.

Yes, I know the lighting is wrong, I’m squinting, I am bad at selfies! But I was just so excited to see this up there. This is another photo that captures that moment in time.
I’m very happy with the way this photo turned out, and feel honoured that it was chosen. I hope many people look at it and smile.
Will I ever get to paint this scene? Maybe … I haven’t given up just yet.
