Every day is a struggle. Work, eat, sleep, art, life. This struggle is also reflected in nature and is what inspires me the most.
The colours, the textures, and the play of light trigger my imagination. Images hide in my conscious and unconscious thoughts and burst into life when I get into my studio.
I allow my intuition to guide my art practice, using acrylic, charcoal, watercolour, pastel, or pencil as the mood, or subject takes me. Exploring different styles, and combining different mediums to create each finished piece is a meditative process, exploring the struggle.
Glenda Markwell
For me, art is not a choice. It is part of my soul, my heart, my thoughts, my life.
From a young age, I have always drawn and spent time with my grandfather, Harry McVey, learning to paint the natural landscape. From him, I learned the love of trees and nature.
Although I have no formal art training, I have attended many art workshops which have helped expand my art knowledge and styles. You can see the influence of artists such as Mignon Parker and David Hinchliffe in my latest works.
I am new to exhibiting too. For me, my art is a very personal expression. But as I near the end of my “working life” I realised that there is nothing to be gained by hiding my art.
Since I have started entering exhibits, I have found that I have gained so much enjoyment from conversations with others about art. It doesn’t matter if the art is different in style and nature. We artists share the common ground of the pleasure of expressing ourselves through our art, and sharing.
Art brings joy and light into your home. It brings memories, stories, and sometimes just a feeling of peace.
